The nearby hamlet of Coombe is owned by the Landmark Trust, some of the attractive thatched cottages are available to let through the trust.
Alongside the road through the valley lies the tenanted National Trust Farm of Stowe Barton (not open to the public). This superb old farmhouse was built from materials left over from the demolition of Stowe House, which was, for over four hundred and fifty years, the residence of the Grenvilles, including the famed Elizabethan mariner, Sir Richard Grenville. Sir Richard's grandson, Sir Beville Grenville, who was victorious at the nearby Civil War "Battle of Stratton", fought many courageous encounters before dying at the "Battle of Lansdowne" in 1643, he is buried in the parish church at Kilkhampton.
